Dundee motorists - pay for your parking by mobile

 2nd Jun 2011

Motorists in Dundee will no longer need to make sure they have the right cash to pay for a parking ticket as long as they have their mobile phone.

Dundee City Council, in partnership with RingGo, is launching an 18-month pilot scheme this month for on street and metered car parks in the city.

Drivers can still pay using coins, with the system introduced to help businesses and visitors by making the parking process easier and encouraging people to stay in the city centre for longer.

Will Dawson, convener of the city development committee said: "By offering another option for motorists to pay for their parking we are using the available technology to make life easier for drivers.

"The service provided by RingGo offers the option of paying for parking quickly and easily, without the need to carry around a pocket full of change. The technology is already being used by other local authorities across the country and I am delighted we are able to introduce it here.

"It not only allows payment to be made by phone but you can also choose to get a text when your paid for parking period is about to run out, and extend your stay as long as it does not go beyond the maximum length permitted stay.

"Not only does this cut your chances of getting a Fixed Penalty Notice, but gives you the added convenience of not having to return to your car."

A centrally monitored computer controlled system relays information to parking attendants who can get up to the minute information on the status of any parked vehicle.

Parking via mobile phone will initially be available at 16 off street car parks, five long stay car parks and 34 on street locations throughout the city.
