Cherwell District Council has upgraded its pay and display car parks in Banbury and Bicester with the introduction of a pay by phone service from Thursday 22 May 2008.
The RingGo system allows drivers to pay for their parking and top up their parking time by using their debit or credit card over the phone. It even sends an optional text reminder when the parking time is due to expire. Drivers will still be able to pay using the coin machines.
The Council has teamed up with Cobalt Telephone Technologies who will provide the pay by phone service called RingGo at all the district's 26 pay and display car parks. Signs and posters will explain the new way to pay.
Once drivers are registered by calling 01865 989 000 they will be able to pay for their subsequent parking by phone in under a minute. Parking attendants will be equipped with a special mobile phone that will show them which cars have paid for parking by phone.
The new service brings Cherwell into line with parking at Oxford City and Wycombe District Councils. The service is also offered at most First Great Western railway stations and in several London boroughs.
Councillor Nigel Morris, the Portfolio Holder for Urban and Rural Services, says: "Cherwell is making parking easier for drivers with the introduction of this new service.
"It means there's no need for drivers who use pay by phone to carry coins around. In addition, they can always pay the exact amount.
"And they can top up without having to return to their cars, if for example, they've been held up in a business meeting or out with friends."
