Improved Phone-Parking Service for Salisbury

 24th Feb 2009

RingGo Salisbury smallFrom 1 March 2009, Salisbury is introducing an improved and lower-cost phone-parking service across the city.

The new mobile phone parking service is run by RingGo "pay-by-phone" parking.  While phone parking has been offered by an alternative, Canadian provider since January 2006, the introduction of RingGo enhances the service for motorists.

The service is cheaper to call and, from Sunday, motorists will no longer need to dial the more expensive 0870 number when they park, but instead use the 01722 562 564 telephone number shown on signs in the car parks.  This is a local Salisbury number, so the cost of calling the system is significantly lower.  For people with a mobile phone contract, the call will often be included free in their "bundle" of minutes.

In addition, RingGo has wider availability across the South and South West - so that people parking in Salisbury can use the same service at various locations locally.  RingGo parking was implemented at Salisbury Station last month, has been offered at most First Great Western stations since 2006 and is also offered in Andover, Bournemouth, Bristol, Christchurch, Havant, Poole, Portsmouth, Romsey and Taunton.  Feedback from these sites has been extremely good, with high overall and repeat usage.

The transfer to the new system has been carefully planned.  Leaflets are being given to existing pay by phone users to explain the changes and new signs are in place in car parks and at pay and display machines.  Civil Enforcement Officers will be available during the first few days to explain the new system to customers and further information is available on the Salisbury District Council website.  Coverage of the changeover in local press and media is also playing a key communication role.

Drivers who currently use the old system in Salisbury need to register with the new service provider - RingGo - either on-line at www.RingGo.co.uk, or by using the number above to make sure they can continue to pay for parking by phone.

Councillor Helena McKeown, Portfolio Holder for Transport, says of the implementation: "We are extremely pleased to be introducing RingGo to Salisbury.  These days, not everyone carries a lot of change, so local residents and people visiting the city appreciate the fact they can pay for their parking using their credit or debit card.  The 'topping up' facility is also useful if they want to stay a bit longer than planned - and it obviously benefits Salisbury, too."
