Cllr Sally Derham Wilkes, chairman of Christchurch Council's Community Services Committee, was the first person to use the new RingGo cashless parking system soon after it went live in Christchurch on 1 February.
Cllr Derham Wilkes said: "This is a great step forward in offering residents and visitors different ways to pay for their parking. People can still pay with cash in the normal way but how often do we turn up at car parks with no change and have to go off to find a shop to buy something we don't need just to get change?
"Now people can just phone through, make their payment quickly and be on their way. The system can also be used to top up your parking if you find you are away from your car longer than expected."
As if to prove her point, no sooner had Cllr Derham Wilkes used the system, than Sarah Woodsford from Basingstoke arrived at the same car park. Realising she didn't have any change, she calmly got out her mobile phone and rang the number on the pay machine.
Sarah Woodsford was delighted with the system and didn't realise she was one of the first users. "I'm always turning up at places with no cash, so it's really handy to have this system," she said. "I've never seen it before and I'm really impressed."
Christchurch is one of the first councils to introduce the scheme as part of the rollout of RingGo along the south coast following the successful introduction of the scheme by Bournemouth Borough Council during the summer.
