Sir George Young MP, former Secretary of State for Transport, will be among the first to try RingGo phone parking at midday today (5 December) at Andover, at the heart of Sir George's North West Hampshire constituency. Motorists who choose to pay by phone simply ring through to a Basingstoke number having parked their car. When connected, they key in a four-digit identification code on their mobile phone to notify their location, give the number plate details of their car and authorise the fee to be taken directly from their credit or debit card account. The new scheme is part of a series of improvements to South West Trains' car parks to ensure that facilities are secure, fairly allocated and easy to use. Residents of Andover will be familiar with RingGo phone parking, as it was introduced by Test Valley Council in most of its car parks earlier this year - making it one of only three towns in the South that offers this consistent payment scheme to both local users and commuters. People who have already used the service in Andover town centre will find the system will automatically recognise them if they call to use it at the railway station. The core cost of the parking will remain at the current rate, but motorists choosing to use the service, known as RingGo will pay a premium of 20p. Regular ticket machines will remain at every site.
