Drivers using car parks owned by Shepway District Council will no longer have to worry about having the right money to pay for a parking ticket. All they have to do is pick up their mobile phone and pay using their credit or debit card. Working in partnership with RingGo, the council is offering the cashless parking service in all its car parks throughout the district from Monday 7 December. Dover was the first local council in Kent to adopt cashless parking when it started offering RingGo in June this year and the system has proved to be very successful in council-run car parks across the country. Cllr Malcolm Dearden, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Transport, said: the new initiative would give drivers the choice of how to pay for their parking. "This is a simple an effective way of paying for car parking in our pay-and-display car parks. Drivers will not have to worry about having the right change or rushing back to put more money in the machine if they are running late. It's simply a case of picking up a mobile phone to extend their stay. As Christmas approaches visitors from further may not know how much parking charges are in our car parks and might not have the right coins which makes this cashless service even more welcome." First time users can register by mobile phone when they want to park by calling 01737 880022 or in advance, by visiting www.RingGo.co.uk. Registration takes only a couple of minutes but once completed using the service is much quicker. Once registered drivers use the same local telephone number 01737 880022 to pay for parking, simply by giving the car park reference number, which is on the pay-and-display machine, and stating how long they wish to stay for. No ticket is needed. Parking times can be extended by the same method. Using the service costs a flat rate of 20p in addition to a car park's normal parking fees. No parking tickets are issued as parking attendants can accurately check which vehicles have paid using the RingGo system through special mobile phones, which link directly to RingGo's central data system. |
